Dexter cattle breed shows are run in the North and South Island under the rules and regulations of the Royal Agricultural Society. The rules of the Dexter Cattle Society of NZ Inc for purebred and grade registered animals apply.

Only purebred cattle are eligible for the North Island or South Island Supreme Awards.

Steers are not eligible for North Island or South Island Supreme Awards. Dexters may be shown clipped or unclipped.

There are two Dexter show shields, introduced to encourage DCSNZ members to enter cattle in the breed shows.

• The North Island Breed Show (NIBS) shield — awarded since 2002
• The South Island Breed Show (SIBS) shield — awarded since 2011

The NIBS & SIBS are held in conjunction with an A&P Show at a pre-arranged venue which will be advertised in advance.

The Shield is presented to the Supreme Champion Dexter at the relevant Dexter Breed Show each season.

• Dexter breeders must be current financial members of the DCSNZ in order to be eligible to compete for the Shield. Any DCSNZ member can compete for either Shield, no matter where they live.
• If the owner of the Supreme Champion Dexter is not a current financial member of the DCSNZ , the shield will not be awarded that year.
• The Shield is awarded to the animal, not to the stud.
• The recipient must own the animal and have paid the entry fee.
• The recipient is expected to pay for the engraving of the Shield.
• The recipient is responsible for ensuring that the Shield reaches the NIBS or SIBS venue in time for presentation at the following season’s show.

• Cow – 3 yrs & over, with own calf at foot
• Cow – 2 yrs, with or without own calf at foot
• Heifer yearling – born since 1st June 2010
• Heifer calf – born since 1st June 2011
• Bull – 2 yrs & over
• Bull yearling – born since 1st June 2010

• Youth Handler – 17 yrs & under. Yearling or calf, either sex. Purebred or grade. To be judged 50% on
• handler’s ability & 50% on presentation.
• Novice Handler – 3 shows or less. To be judged on showmanship. Any age/grade Dexter.
• Open Handler – over 17 yrs. To be judged on showmanship. Any age/grade Dexter.
• GROUP OF 3 PUREBRED ANIMALS, by same sire or dam – any age, not necessarily owned by one
• exhibitor.

• Cow – 3 yrs & over, with own calf at foot
• Cow – 2 yrs, with or without own calf at foot
• Heifer yearling – born since 1st June 2010
• Heifer calf – born since 1st June 2011
